These terms are used almost interchangeably--they
are suitably vague and can cover lots of different territory; although some
reference works of this type actually do explain how to do something (e.g. how
to format a citation to a journal article in a bibliography) these books are
more than just "how to" books; some well known reference books that
do the same job but are called different names: The MLA Handbook, The Chicago
Manual of Style, The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association.
Each of these sources provides the same kind of information yet their titles
use different terminology. Others handbooks, manuals, and guides provide basic information. Examples of these types of sources in various disciplines include: CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics, Political Handbook of the World, Oxford Guide to British Women Authors. |
